RCIA is a process through which new members are brought into the Roman Catholic Church through the Sacraments of Initiation (Baptism, Confirmation, and the Eucharist). This process is for adults who have not been baptized or were baptized in another denomination.
Each person wishing to be initiated into the Catholic Church is assigned a sponsor who is a guide and traveling companion for the journey. This process is also open to adult Catholics who have not received First Eucharist and Confirmation.
The Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults, RCIA for short, is a process within parish life designed to welcome new members into the Church and/or to open every Catholic parishioner to deeper belief and renewal of his or her Christian faith. But genuine openness takes time. Accepting Jesus’ way of life demands a conversion of heart, a turning away from self-centeredness to selflessness – not just once, but many times throughout our lives.
